To floor an attic you ll need to install a sub floor for support before laying your plywood floor. Even if you have 2 x 10 or 2 x 12 joists spaced 16 inches on center oc it is a good idea to limit the amount of weight the attic floor will bear. 1 x 6 3 spruce is a step up from pallet quality wood but makes a fine usable floor in an unfinished attic space. Attic space offers many options for building storage or living space especially if you already have a well built basic flooring in place. If you do have an existing walk up attic with traditional floor framing the principle concern when converting the space into a living area will be weight. If you don t need additional storage think of flooring an area less than the entire attic such as a small section around the attic door opening. You ll have to construct a wooden frame or sub floor with boards 16 inches apart to provide extra support for the floor.

First you ll need to measure the area you want to floor so you can calculate how much wood you ll require. These are lightweight interlocking panels that are secured to the attic joists by screws. Made from recycled materials these panels are already cut to either 16 or 24 inch widths depending on the space between your trusses.
